Unsalted butter
Aged hard cheese such as Parmigiano-Reggiano, finely grated

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil.
Grate cheese and set aside.
Add pasta to the pot and boil 1-2 minutes.
Melt butter in a skillet. Remove undrained pasta from pot (allow some water to cling to the pasta) and transfer to skillet with the melted butter.
Stir, then add cheese. Keep stirring until creamy.
Add more cheese or more pasta water as needed.
