1 cup sugar
1 cup margarine or butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream and beat well shortening and sugar. Mix in eggs. Make a paste of red food coloring and cocoa and add to the shortening, sugar and eggs. Mix together. Add flour and buttermilk alternating to the above mixture. Then add salt, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Add baking soda to vinegar holding over the bowl as it foams. Blend well. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes in two 9" greased and floured pans or a 9" x 13" greased and floured pan. If using the layer 9" pans, split the layers and frost. It makes a 4 layer cake.

Frosting:
Cook the flour and milk together until very thick, stirring constantly. Let cool. Cream the sugar, butter or margarine, and vanilla together until fluffy. After the flour mixture had cooled add it to the creamed sugar and butter mixture. Mix until blended. Should be the consistency of whipped cream.
