1 pkg yeast
warm water
1/4 cup melted shortening
1 Tblsp. salt
1 Tblsp sugar
7-71/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions:
Directions:
In a large round bowl,:
Soften 1 pkg yeast in 1/4 cup water, then add to 2 cups warm water.
Add melted shortening, salt and sugar.
Mix in 7-7 1/2 cups flour.

Knead for 5-8 minutes,
Let rise until double in a warm place. (cover dough with a slightly damp cloth or plastic wrap sprayed with Pam or buttered) for about 1 hour or so
Punch down the dough, then let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
Divide it into 2 , then each half into 3 14" strips (roll them in your hands on a floured board or countertop until long enough)
Braid the 3 strands by pinching them together at one end, braiding them, and sealing
the other end together.( You'll have 2 braided loaves.)
Place them on a greased cookie sheet, side by side.
Cover them, and let them rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
Brush the tops of the loaves with beaten egg, and sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds (if desired)
Bake at 425º for 15 minutes, the at 350º for 20-25 minutes.
They are done when they sound hollow when tapped.

Grandma Pat made this bread for us a lot when I was a kid. It is the best bread I've ever
eaten, especially warm with real butter on it.
