Directions:
Cook together sugar and dark Karo syrup until it comes to a rolling boil. Take off stove and stir in butter and shortening until melted. Transfer to a large deep kettle and let cool. Then add 2-3 tsp. Anise oil. Next mix in 1/2 cup sweet cream or whipping cream. Add 3 well beaten eggs. Sift some flour with 3 tsp of soda and baking powder. Add enough flour to handle dough. It is best to test bake cookies to make sure there is enough flour. If not enough the cookie will be flat. If too much it will be too hard. Bake @ 375 º for 10 min. Cool completely and then shake cookie in a bag of powdered sugar to coat. Store in an air tight container; can be frozen.

Personal Notes:
Grandma Johanna Stroh would send these cookies to us and Grandma Clara Ready passed on the tradition and made them with her children. Tastes like black licorice and it is not Christmas without them.
