1 cup sugar
2/3 cup shortening
3 eggs
1 cup milk
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs and beat. Sift baking powder, flour and salt and add alternately with milk, add vanilla. If desired, on one side of oblong pan, put one half plain. Then add the following spices and put on the other side of the pan. Bake 350° for 20 to 30 minutes.
Spices:
1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice 1/4 teaspoon cloves

John liked a plain, flat cake with no frosting. He was famous for stomping his feet or slamming the door when he walked in the kitchen so that the cake would fall. That's the way he liked it best (flat). If Nettie ever put anything on the cake, it was fresh whipped cream.
