1 cup brown sugar. packed
1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp. vinegar
1 cup water

1 cup sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
3 tbsp shortening
3/4 cup milk

5 cups apples, sliced and pared
1/4 tsp cinnamon
dash of nutmeg
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla

In saucepan, mix brown sugar, flour and salt. Stir in water and vinegar. Cook over low heat, stirring until thick. Set aside. Heat oven to 375 degrees.Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. With 2 knives cut in 3 Tbsp shortening until size of peas. Add the milk, and stir until moistened, but lumpy. Arrange the apples in well greased 12x8x2 inch baking dish. To sauce add the cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice vanilla and butter. Pour over apples. Drop dough by Tbsp on top of apples Bake 40 min. or until brown. Serve with cream or ice cream.
