3 cups all purpose flour
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ tsp salt
1 ¼ cups butter or margarine, at room temperature
1 ½ cups confectioner’s sugar
1 large egg
2 tsp vanilla
For decoration: candy sequins, small bows formed from thin strips of cherry fruit rolls

Mix flour, cocoa and salt. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla, then flour mixture until blended. Cover and chill 1 hour or until firm. Heat oven to 350. Have cookie sheets ready. For each bear measure out 1 level tbsp, 1 rounded tsp and 6 half tsp of dough. Shape all pieces into balls.

To assemble, place large balls (bodies) on cookie sheet. Place medium size balls (heads) above and press gently to secure to body. Attach small balls for paws and ears. Pinch off tiny piece of dough for nose and attach. Place candy sequins for eyes, tips of nose and buttons. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until cookies look dry. Remove to wire racks to cool. Press bows under chins.

Makes 22 three-inch bears.
