½ cup soft butter
½ cup light brown sugar, packed
½ cup sugar
½ tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 cups sifted flour
1/8 tsp salt
¼ tsp baking soda
Filling (See Below)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter; add sugars, vanilla and egg; beat until light. Add sifted dry ingredients, and mix well. Chill until firm enough to roll. Halve dough; roll each half, on floured surface into a 12 x 9 inch rectangle. Spread with Filling; roll up tightly from the end. Wrap in paper; chill overnight. Freeze for easier slicing. Slice 1/8 inch thick. Back on lightly greased cookie sheets at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes. Store in airtight container.

Filling: Bring 1 package (7 ¼ oz.) chopped pitted dates to a boil with ¼ cup sugar, dash salt, and 1/3 cup water; simmer 5 minutes, stirring often; add 1 cup chopped nuts, and cool.
