1 T vinegar
1 t baking soda
1/4 c shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 t salt
2 T cocoa
1 t vanilla
2 oz red food coloring
2 1/4 cup flour
1 cup buttermilk

Frosting: 1 cup milk
5 T flour
1 cup sugar
2 sticks real butter
1 t vanilla

Beat shortening and sugar until creamy. Then add eggs, salt, cocoa and vanilla until light. Beat in food color (carefully). Alternately beat in flour and buttermilk. Fold in vinegar and baking soda after mixing together first. Pour into 2 greased 9 inch round pans (or line pans with wax paper). Cool and split layers to make 4 layers. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. For frosting, stir milk and flour over medium heat until thick. Stir while heating up., Do this early to cool. Beat sugar and butter until fluffy. Add COOL cooked mixture 1 T at a time, beating at high speed until smooth. Beat in vanilla. Whip icing about 5 minutes. I double my icing. Keep refrigerated after iced.
