Cream together:

1 c. chopped dates
1 tbsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water

Mix together:

1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
Add 2 c. flour, 3/4 tsp. baking soda, and 1/2 tsp. salt.

Spread mixture into a 9x13 pan and sprinkle 1 c. brown sugar, 1/2 c. nuts, and 1 package chocolate chips over the top of the mixture. Bake at 375° for 30 minutes.
